While we are of course glad that Indian Point will no longer be creating new radioactive waste, we know that there will be economic challenges for the town and for current employees once the reactors are shut down. Local and state officials are looking ahead, as this report on a recent conference on decommissioning shows:
From the article: “On Oct. 30, the Westchester County Board of Legislators unanimously approved a resolution, co-sponsored by Legislator Catherine Borgia (D-Ossining), demanding that current energy employees be hired to assist in the decommissioning of the plant and the economic development of the area. The employees would also receive job counseling to advance their careers elsewhere.” We applaud this action and similar ones taken by other governmental agencies to handle this closing in a way that maximizes the benefits and minimizes the disruption.
