Dear Editor:
Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, over 400 elected officials and 52 municipalities have called for the closure of the Indian Point nuclear power plant. While the plant continues to operate – without a workable evacuation plan and with continuous mechanical problems – Entergy, the owner/operator, has announced its interest in getting the reactor relicensed for an additional 20-years, creating an additional 2000 tons of high-level radioactive waste that will sit indefinitely on the banks of the Hudson River. The region has mobilized to stop Entergy: to-date over _____ municipalities, including ____ counties, have passed resolutions opposing Indian Point’s relicensing. A similar resolution is currently stalled at the ________________ (Town/Village Board). Our elected officials need to take the risks of Indian Point seriously and join hundreds of other elected officials in opposing relicensing.
Dear Elected Official:
I ask you to oppose Entergy’s expected request with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a 20-year license renewal of Indian Point 2 & 3, which would extend their licenses to 2033 and 2035, respectively.
This is not a place for a nuclear reactor: over 20 million people live within the 50-mile radius of the plants. Long before the tragic events of 9/11 and the tremendous population growth to the region, Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff member, Robert Ryan, commented in 1979, Indian Point is "one of the most inappropriate sites in existence" for a nuclear plant. It surely should not be granted a 20-year license extension.
The region has mobilized to stop Entergy.
