Take Action! Tell NRC Not to Accept Weakened Standards that Fail to Protect the Public from Radiation!
Send
NRC an email NOW!
The
Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced in early September that it
is moving to implement the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA)
recently proposed radiation protection standard for Yucca Mountain. As
EPA's draft proposal falls far short of protecting public health, and
the public comment process is still ongoing, this rush by NRC to accept
the standard is outrageous and inappropriate. NRC should wait until EPA
has taken public comment into account and issued a final standard,
before going forward.
As
currently proposed, EPA's standard would be the least protective
radiation protection standard in the world, and disregards even the
agency's own previous recommendations. If approved, the standard will
ignore the scientific consensus on the health impact of radiation, as
well as the many unresolved problems surrounding radioactive waste. It
will set a terrible precedent; lowering the bar for radiation protection
across the country.
ACTION
ALERT: Thanks to the efforts of County Legislators Michael Kaplowitz
and Martin Rogowsky, Westchester
County has passed a resolution opposing the re-licensing of the Indian Point
nuclear power plant. Following Westchester’s lead, more than 30
other municipalities have passed similar resolutions. Kaplowitz and
Rogowsky have now sent letters to all of the towns within 50 miles of the plant
asking them to pass similar resolutions.
We expect that in spite of ongoing problems at Indian Point, including the newly discovered leak from the spent fuel pool at IP2, Entergy will be submitting its application for license renewal to the NRC in the very near term. The re-licensing is for an additional 20 years of operation which would allow Indian Point 2 and 3 to operate until 2033 and 2035 respectively.
We need you to call your local Supervisors, Mayors and/or Town Board Members to ask them to introduce and help get passed a resolution opposing the re-licensing of Indian Point. Click on this link to go to the League of Women Voter’s Website where you can look up the phone number of your local city or town representatives. Please note that the League provides this information as a public service and our linking to their website does not imply their position on this issue.
When you call, you can say something like the following:
“Hello, my name is _________ and I live at [Address]. I am calling to ask you to take the lead in passing a [name of town/city] resolution opposing the re-licensing of the Indian Point nuclear power plant. Westchester County has already passed such a resolution, and you have probably received a letter from County Legislators Michael Kaplowitz and Martin Rogowsky asking you to help get such a resolution passed in [name of town/city]. Can I count on your support with this? If so, when would such a resolution appear on a meeting agenda?”
Please let us know which elected officials have agreed to support this effort and when this will be discussed at a meeting by either giving us a call at 888-I-SHUT-IT (1-888-474-8848) or by email at ipsecpc@bestweb.net
Are you concerned about emissions from Indian
Point? Entergy routinely releases radioactive gas and liquid into the air and
the Hudson River. Call The Entergy Public Relations office at (914)
271-7132 to ask why they have discontinued the daily release reports
formerly at (800) 473-8855 for IP 3 and (800) 822-9602 for IP 2.
Send a
letter to your local, state, and federal officials asking them to oppose
the relicensing of Indian Point, call
for the immediate closure of Indian Point and oppose Entergy's PR
campaign targeting communities of color and low income.
