Short
Subject Film and Video Remi Award
New York City (May 19, 2003): The Indian Point Safe Energy Coalition recently received the Silver Award in the Short Subject Film and Video - Documentary category at the 36th Annual WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival.
The festival is one of the world’s oldest and largest film and video competitions, having honored such directors as Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Ridley Scott, David Lynch, Ang Lee, and the Coen Brothers long before they became household names. Over 4500 category entries from 37 countries were submitted to the festival, which took place in Houston, Texas from April 4th thorough April 13th.
Nowhere
to Run is a 21-minute documentary on the dangers of Indian
Point, directed by Tobe Carey of Willow Mixed Media.
Nowhere to Run delves into the issues surrounding Indian Point,
including lack of security from attack, the failure of the NRC in its oversight
role, the plant’s troubled operational history, potential dangers of the spent
fuel storage, the inadequate evacuation plan, the limited capabilities to treat
radiological contamination cases, the dire potential economic impact of closure,
and feasibility of energy production from alternative, renewable,
environmentally friendly sources. It also showcases interviews with many experts
in the field, including nuclear engineers and scientists, elected officials,
emergency service planners, and emergency medicine physicians.
The
documentary has been widely distributed in VHS form to libraries, schools,
elected officials, and interested citizens; it has also been shown at public
forums and events.
“In
our efforts to educate the public on the dangers of Indian Point, the coalition
felt it was important to provide a well-researched documentary to the public and
to elected officials. We were lucky
to have the expertise of Tobe Carey, an award winning documentarian, as well as
the breadth of knowledge from experts in the fields of nuclear physics,
medicine, and emergency service planning. This
award acknowledges not only the hard work of
those who participated in the project but also the quality of the final
product,” comments Lisa Rainwater van Suntum, IPSEC Project Coordinator.
To date 310 elected
officials have called for closure of the nuclear power plants, and 45
municipalities have passed shutdown resolutions.
