Start the afternoon at 1:30 P.M. at Bleakley & Broadway, the old IP entrance, walking with Jun Yasuda and the Peace Walkers to begin our commemoration of the tragedy at Fukushima. The day continues with music, panel, and potluck meal at Peekskill Presbyterian Church, 705 South Street, Peekskill, NY

3:00 PM : Experts make the connection between what happens during uranium mining, the great damage it does to people and the land, and the fuel for Indian Point and Fukushima.

  • Hear the latest information on Fukushima from Yuko Tonohira, recently returned from Japan.
  • Meet activist Leona Morgan, a Diné (Navajo) and a member of Diné No Nukes. She will talk about her people and their fight against uranium mining. She will be joined by Jennifer Thurston of Information Network for Responsible Mining, who battles to clean up the deserted uranium mines that imperil her community in Colorado. Klee Benally, also a Diné, of Clean Up The Mines! will address resource colonization including uranium, protection of sacred places, and tactics towards collective liberation.
  • Gary Shaw of the Indian Point Safe Energy Coalition will talk about Indian Point earth-
    quake risks and where we are now in the re-licensing battle.

5:00 P.M.: Jun Yasuda, the Grafton Peace Pagoda, announces the Peace Walkers’ participation in a cross-country walk from Livermore Labs in California (starting on March 20) to arrive in New York on April 26 for the United Nations’ regular 5-year review of the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty.
