BUCHANAN – A strike by nuclear power plant workers has been avoided as an agreement has been reached between union employees and the owners of the Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan.Officials with owner operator Entergy announced today that they have reached a new four-year contract agreement with the Utility Workers Union of America Local 1-2.
Terms of the contract were not disclosed but the talks centered on a wage increase and medical benefits to cover workers until 2020 – one year after the nuclear power plant shuts down.
The agreement still needs to be approved in a vote by the union membership of approximately 330 workers.
In a statement, Entergy officials say they are happy with the deal. “This agreement benefits all parties – the workers, the union, and Entergy. I applaud the union’s negotiating team, led by James Slevin, for its continued discussions to reach an amicable agreement,” said Tony Vitale, site vice president and Entergy’s top official at Indian Point. “All of our employees will continue to focus on their mission to provide reliable power to millions of New Yorkers through the date of permanent closure in 2021.”
Indian Point is home to two operating nuclear power plants, Unit 2 and Unit 3, which generate approximately 2,000 megawatts of electricity for New York City and Westchester County.
