Indian Point nuclear power plant, Buchanan, NY

A New York Congresswoman says a Westchester County town in her district has been awarded funding to help expand its tax base. This comes as the nearby Indian Point nuclear power plant is set to completely shut down in seven months.

Democratic Congresswoman Nita Lowey announced on Tuesday that Cortlandt will use the federally-allotted $3.2 million for a new educational recreation facility on town-owned property along the Hudson River and infrastructure improvements including roads and a water line. With Buchanan-based Indian Point’s closure expected to cost surrounding communities millions in tax dollars and hundreds of jobs, Lowey, who chairs the House Appropriations Committee, has been working with local officials to help provide federal economic assistance. Indian Point Unit 2 was shut down permanently April 30th. Unit 3 is scheduled to permanently shut down by April 30th next year.
