“Local leaders and environmental groups have urged Holtec to ship the water to a licensed disposal facility, but company President Kris Singh said in a letter to Sen. Markey in June that the option to ship had been discarded because it “runs counter to our basic tenets of environmental justice.”
Holtec’s decision may also have been based on the estimated cost of $20 million.”
While water from the fuel pools runs “counter to basic tenets of environmental justice” Holtec has no problem vigorously advocating moving the much deadlier fuel rods to New Mexico.
It would be interesting to find out the name of the depository for low level radioactive waste and talk with people there. Maybe have some of them come to NY and talk with us. We know NM is fighting tooth and nail against bringing fuel rods into the state and so are we.
