We’re sharing this call to action in solidarity with our friends at Sovereign Iñupiat for a Living Arctic and the People vs Fossil Fuels Coalition:
President Biden just approved ConocoPhillips’ Willow project, the massive oil drilling project in the Alaskan Arctic. By greenlighting this major fossil fuel expansion, President Biden is betraying his promises to end new oil and gas drilling on federal lands. He’s also defying a massive show of resistance led by those who will be most impacted.
The Willow project could produce up to 180,000 barrels of oil a day – or 263 million tons of carbon pollution over 30 years – at a time when we need to stop investing in fossil fuel expansion. It’s a total betrayal of Biden’s climate and environmental justice promises.
Millions of activists, especially young people and Indigenous communities, have called, posted, and wrote in demanding that the president #StopWillow. This move from the president shows that he is putting profits over people. We need to show him that our climate, our futures, our communities, and our wildlife matter.
Climate activists have long pushed for President Biden to use his existing authority to stop approvals for all new fossil fuel projects and exports, end fossil fuel production on public lands and waters, and declare a climate emergency to more rapidly shift us off of fossil fuels.
Biden may have approved the Willow project this week, but it’s far from being built. We’re supporting organizing work that will continue fighting to stop Willow and all fossil fuel projects. This isn’t over, and we will continue fighting to make sure this project never breaks ground.
