SAVE THE DATE – May 6th at 2pm:
HELP FIGHT TO PROTECT OUR BEAUTIFUL HUDSON RIVER: RALLY TO SAVE THE RIVER
at Cortlandt Waterfront Park in Verplanck

From Cortlandt Town Supervisor Dr. Richard Becker:
“As you might be aware, Holtec International is planning to discharge a million gallons of radioactive spent nuclear rod pool water into the Hudson River.

This is part of the decommissioning process, in which the water that remains in the pools after the radioactive rods are removed, must be disposed of. Several options are available to discharge this water, but Holtec has decided that the most expeditious way is to dump it into a beautiful Hudson River. The excuse given is that they have been doing this over the years, and that the concentration of waste nuclear material is safe to discharge in the river.

The Town Board of Cortlandt strongly disagrees. As a physician, there is no safe established level of nuclear waste. Experts have established certain levels that they consider safe, but this is speculative. So much time and money has been spent restoring the river to its natural state, that it is ill-advised and unconscionable to release this radioactive water. Folks still swim and boat in the river, many still receive their drinking water from the river, and we are concerned about the fish and wildlife. We are determined to stop this.

There will be a very large rally at the Cortlandt Waterfront Park in Verplanck on Saturday, May 6 (rain date Sunday, May 7) at 2 PM.
Although we anticipate that this will be a large event, we need you to join us! AND, this will be a family friendly event.

Officials at all levels of Government (Federal, State, County, and local) will attend along with representatives from Riverkeeper, Clearwater, and our schools. Many local expert, and involved local citizens will provide information. In addition, there will be entertainment and we have confirmation from several solo artists, including Dar Williams, Tom Paxton, and Brian McGrath will perform. There will be activities for children and food trucks. Please join us!”
